Professional Development

In January 2005 an article entitled “Andy Curtis: A passionate professional” was published in the New Routes magazine, based on an interview with me in Brazil. The title for the piece was chosen because I have been passionate about professional development for more than ten years; promoting, presenting and publishing on PD since 1996. For example, during my time as Executive Director of the School of English at Queen’s University in Canada, the school was the only one of its kind in the country where all staff – administrative as well as teaching staff – were required to engage in on-going professional development, supported by the School.

In 2001, together with Kathleen M. Bailey and David Nunan, we published the book Pursuing Professional Development: The self as source. More recently, I have published a book chapter in the TESOL Association book Professional Development in Language

Education: Volume Four: Communities of Supportive (2005). Since 1998, I have published 30 articles on professional development, including eight articles in refereed journals and 19 in professional publications.

Over the last 11 years, between 1996 and 2006, I have given 20 plenary or keynote addresses and invited presentations on different aspects of professional development in 10 countries and territories: Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and Panama. In addition to publications and invited presentations on professional development, I have also been invited to work as a consultant on professional development projects for language teaching organizations in Brazil, Indonesia, Japan and Peru.
